Dear Mr. Knop, in your book "Hunger und Lust" (Hunger and Lust) you argue that food should no longer be consumed according to rational aspects, but rather to listen more to your own feelings, regardless of what you eat or drink. How did you come to this conclusion and what drove you to write a book about it?

For the first book on culinary body intelligence, I critically analyzed more than 500 study results from 2007 to 2010 - in these 4 years almost all study material with public relevance. More than 200 of these study results now underpin the core thesis in HUNGER & LUST: In the area of ​​nutrition, there is no evidence of any of the common rules. Exactly the opposite is the case: we know that we actually don't know anything. Therefore, the nutritional recommendations change with regularity. Ergo: Forget about any dietary rules and trust only your individual body feelings, real hunger & desire, because the following applies: Everyone is (s) t different. My motivation for writing a book is easy to explain: I would like to help people regain more joy in life, enjoyment and freedom while eating by strengthening the book in their trust in their own bodies - for more responsible eaters in our country. Because it is just pathetic how the exuberant nutrition propaganda tries to patronize people in their actions - and based on a scientific foundation as durable as a snowman in the blazing midday sun in midsummer.

In your opinion, how did a development towards a purely intellectual diet come about when, as you write, hunger is the most important drive to support life? What is your thesis that it has come to the point that people no longer trust their own body sensation?

The exuberant nutrition propaganda of the past decade is the decisive factor that has led many people to a predominantly intellectual diet. When the sermons of the food popes pound on the people over and over again, at some point you like to be influenced and think: "Well, if everyone keeps writing about how healthy fruits and vegetables are, that red meat causes cancer and sugar makes you fat," then there has to be something to it. ”After a lot of listening, this pseudo-scientific half-knowledge creeps into the back of the head and activates the guilty conscience:“ Oh, better take the healthy variant. ”And the more the eating behavior is mind-controlled, the faster you lose the feeling for real hunger. At some point you no longer feel what real hunger feels like. And then the rational diet solidifies "true to the rules". A vicious circle - which you should definitely break out of. Hence my tip: Get to know your real, biological hunger again and only trust your body when eating. Because just ask yourself: Who but your body should know which food is healthy & good for YOU? Nobody.

As you yourself write and have emphasized in other interviews, scientific evidence for your recommendations is not possible. In your book it is easy to read that studies are refuted by counter studies and can only ever show a small section of reality. How do you feel about studies personally? Do you think this is necessary?

In nutrition, you'll be looking for scientific evidence for any recommendation like a needle in a haystack - because there is no hard evidence, just vague guesses. This lack of knowledge base is inherent in the system: Nutritional studies are almost exclusively observational studies. They bring almost nothing. Because what is the result? Always only statistical relationships WITHOUT cause-and-effect evidence. As an example: Just as researchers have observed better general health in red wine drinkers and therefore like to propagate a glass of wine daily, they could also find the statistical connection that breakfast in slippers is linked to being overweight. Apparently nobody is looking for that. Perhaps because people would laugh if the recommendation that followed was: Don't eat breakfast in lined slippers to avoid being overweight? Probably. Ergo: In the area of ​​nutrition, no healthy person needs even a single study result, because the results are nothing more than pure speculation. Not to mention the statistical bending of results. But this “data refinement” does not make the speculations any more true, on the contrary: It makes “healthy” nutrition propaganda even more absurd. (Editor's note: see PDF excerpt "1. We could imagine that it would be a relief for many people who have tried different diets over and over again for years, but that it would be an affront for representatives of certain diets. How have the reactions to your book been so far?

Basically very positive. I speak to many people from the bottom of my heart, according to the motto: “At last I feel confirmed in my natural diet and no longer allow myself to be persuaded by all the food nonsense.” Those who, on the other hand, often use certain forms of nutrition with certain rules as a kind of “substitute religion “Has discovered for himself, he will certainly have his problems with the completely liberal approach of culinary body intelligence - because I do not recommend anything. Except to listen to your own body. If, on the other hand, you prefer eating according to rules, you should eat according to your "nutritional philosophy". The main thing is that people feel really good in their own skin. Because I don't want to serve up a “new eating truth” in my book, but the reader should then decide for himself: Do I continue to believe in dietary rules or do I only trust my body when I eat? Everyone should do what is good for them.

If, as you emphasize, diet rules that should apply to all people are nonsensical, wouldn't institutions like the German Nutrition Society (DGE) be unnecessary?

No, absolutely not. Because the influence of the DGE is great - but unfortunately the nutrition experts there are influencing in the wrong direction, because their main job is the rational transfer of pseudo-scientific half-knowledge. The ladies and gentlemen should better use their “media power” elsewhere, for the good of the people in our country. Therefore, I find it to be welcomed that the DGE essentially agrees with my thesis “only eat what you want when you are really hungry”: “In principle, and for healthy people, his thesis is probably correct”, says Antje Gahl, spokeswoman for the DGE . Unfortunately, however, many people would have lost access to the feeling of hunger. Due to these welcome DGE findings, it would only be logical if the nutrition experts pay more attention to awareness campaigns that give people the feeling of real hunger again - instead of the rational transfer of knowledge, which has no effect because hardly anyone follows any dietary rules anyway holds. By the way, in HUNGER & LUST the readers will find the basic recommendations on how to learn to feel their real hunger again - also to differentiate between this essential feeling for life support and “hunger-free food” in the future. Your findings appear extremely logical when reading the book, but contradict the "mainstream" of nutritional science and the public way of dealing with nutrition so far. Are there any other approaches or publications that go in the same direction as yours?

Sure there are. Unfortunately, I don't recommend any to you because I haven't read any other book written in this way.

What is available for people who have further questions about your suggestions? Do you give lectures or participate in public discussions?

Yes, for example in the near future: On October 5th the “Anti-Diet Club” of the Kölner Stadt Anzeiger invited me to a lecture and on October 23rd I will talk about my book and the theses at the “German Wellness Days” in Wiesbaden to report. I am looking forward to a direct dialogue with interested, responsible eating citizens.

What are your further plans? Are you planning further publications? The pile of new, exciting literature has grown rapidly again in the three months since the completion of the extended new edition. So it may well be that in 2011 I will write the third expanded edition - which will surely convince even the last doubters that dietary rules are nonsense and that only one thing counts when eating: full trust in the intuitive body feelings of hunger and lust.
