Fruit and vegetables prevent heart attacks and strokes

Eight daily servings of fruit and vegetables reduce the risk of death by 22 percent, according to a recently published EPIC heart study. While dietary supplements from the pharmaceutical and food industries are performing worse and worse in terms of preventive health care, the recently published EPIC Heart Study shows that around 8 servings of fruit and vegetables are sufficient to effectively prevent cardiovascular diseases. The mortality rate therefore drops by up to 22 percent if adults consume at least 640 grams of different types of fruit and vegetables a day. The results impressively demonstrate that it is the naturalness of the product that is important and not the split-off pharmaceutical products, which mostly lack the interplay of other important active ingredients.

Dietary supplements with little effect While fresh fruit and vegetables in the EPIC Heart Study 2010 reduced the risk of illness sustainably, dietary supplements came off quite badly in other studies. The researchers found that supplemental vitamin supplements cannot replace a healthy natural diet. Supplements with vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid in the SU.FOL.OM3 study could hardly have a protective effect after a heart attack or stroke.

Study observed European fruit and vegetable consumption
In the course of the study, the researchers around Dr. Francesca L. Crowe of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at Oxford selected the data from 313,074 men and women aged between 45 and 85 years of age. The researchers concentrated on a total of eight European countries. During the eight-year period of study, a total of 1636 people died from various diseases such as heart attack or stroke. The average age of the subjects at the start of the study was 54 years.

The more fruit and vegetables, the lower the relative risk of death. The result can be summarized quickly. The average daily consumption of fruit and vegetables in European countries is around 240 grams. However, if daily consumption increases and the participants eat around eight servings of 80 grams of different fruits and vegetables, the mortality rate has dropped by a whopping 22 percent. If you consumed three to four servings, you could at least reduce the risk rate by 10 percent. Those who ate five to seven chunks of fruit and vegetables a day were able to reduce the risk by 21 percent. So the more the participants ate fresh vegetables and fruit, the more the risk of dying from heart disease died early. However, the WHO recommends an average amount of up to 500 grams. Based on the study results (640 grams), this recommendation should soon be revised upwards. The study was published in the science magazine "European Heart Journal". (sb)
