The Association of Social Services calls for an increase in nursing care insurance. Dementia will increase significantly in the next twenty years.

Due to the continuous increase in dementia diseases, the Federal Association of Private Providers of Social Services is demanding an increase in nursing care insurance. Otherwise, the care of dementia patients will be at risk in the future, according to the association.

Over the next twenty years, the number of dementia patients in Germany will increase from 1.2 million to around 1.8 million. In the opinion of the association of private social services, adequate care can no longer be guaranteed without the increase in the premium for long-term care insurance. Without a slight increase in premiums, adequate care for residents is at risk, warned the chairman of the federal association, Bernd Meurer, to the dpa news agency. For this reason, the nursing care insurance contribution rate has to be raised above the currently planned increase. According to the head of the association, a further adjustment of 0.2 to 0.3 percentage points was necessary. The contribution rate for those subject to social security contributions is currently 1.95 percent.

Financial resources are not sufficient for adequate care
At the moment, only around 700 million euros per year are made available for the special care of dementia patients. According to the expert, however, meaningful and appropriate care requires around 3.6 billion euros per year. The nursing insurance assignments still follow the old definition of the original nursing term. So far, nursing care insurance has been based on physical ailments, said Meurer. “People with dementia often require intensive care around the clock. But that hardly plays a role in the calculation of the maintenance effort ”.

The medical service of the statutory health insurance companies usually only uses the classification to determine whether a person to be cared for can dress, eat or wash themselves. But what happens in the remaining 23 hours of the day, the head of the association asks critically. Many patients are unable to orient themselves and are mostly helpless. The limited definition of care and the inadequate nursing services particularly burden families and relatives who are under great stress. They have to look after their relatives themselves and often do not receive adequate support.

The Federal Ministry of Health has announced that a care reform will be launched this year. Services for dementia sufferers are to be expanded and adapted. Health Minister Philipp Rösler's plans to introduce private supplementary care insurance failed due to criticism from health insurance companies. The federal government intervened and disagreed with plans to privatize long-term care insurance in the future. Due to demographic change, people are getting older. As a result, age-related diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes and dementia will increase significantly in the near future. A steady increase in age-related diseases is already evident.
