Pediatricians reject criticism of the drug report
After the publication of the current pharmaceutical report 2013 by the Barmer GEK last Tuesday, the professional association of pediatricians (bvkj) is now giving a lot of criticism. The reason: The evaluations by the health insurance company had shown that German children and adolescents were prescribed psychopharmaceuticals with increasing frequency, although according to the health care researcher and author of the drug report Prof. Gerd Glaeske there was no medical need for it.
No evidence that children take too many "psychopills" German children take too many "psychopills" - that was the criticism of the 2013 drug report, which was published on Tuesday by the Barmer GEK. However, pediatricians do not want to be left alone, instead the professional association of pediatricians (bvkj) now speaks up and clearly rejects Barmer's statement: According to bvkj President Wolfram Hartmann, [...] no evidence that pediatricians are increasingly prescribing psychotropic drugs in children and adolescents. On the contrary: if you differentiate the numbers of the pharmaceutical report of the Barmer GEK and consider it in connection with the data on medical care for children and adolescents, the prescriptions are even declining ”, according to the current press release on the association's website.
Numbers in decline, especially in young children According to Wolfram Hartmann, this situation would particularly affect young children up to four years old, because on the one hand the prescription numbers, which have been low in any case, have been in decline for years, and on the other hand, the pills will only be used in certain cases: "If these drugs are prescribed in this age group, then essentially as a means (e.g. diazepam) to stop seizures or febrile seizures."
Other doctors responsible for increasing prescription numbers for older children According to the association, other groups of doctors are primarily responsible for the increasing prescription numbers for older children and adolescents - especially among 10- to 14-year-olds, because pediatricians are “in accordance with the existing guidelines If necessary, prescribe so-called psychostimulants for supportive treatment for ADHD ”, said the BVKJ, but there were also“ […] no noticeable increases in children and adolescents in the past year, ”continued the BVKJ.
More and more children and adolescents with psychological abnormalities According to the association, the accusation of a "quick, undifferentiated prescription of psychotropic drugs for children and adolescents" must be clearly rejected, because "due to our long specialist training, we are able to diagnose behavioral abnormalities in a differentiated manner and appropriate therapies that are in most cases not medicinal, ”said bvkj President Wolfram Hartmann in his communication. Nevertheless, the association would have made it known again and again for years "that we see more and more children and adolescents with psychological disorders (so-called new morbidities) in our practices and that, in many cases outside of the health care system, we do not find the socio-educational structures for these children and their families to help effectively, ”the President objected.
